All students at Robertsbridge study a language in Key Stage 3. We believe that a knowledge of foreign languages and the culture of the countries in which they are spoken, is important in providing students with vital skills for the future and in enhancing their career prospects. It should also give them a foundation to learn other languages in the future.

In year 7 we operate a "carousel" system, and all students spend 2 terms studying each of the following languages: French, German and Spanish. This gives all students a taster of each language and the ability to understand and communicate in basic topic areas. At the end of year 7, students will have to make a choice regarding which languages they study in year 8.

At the end of year 8, when GCSE courses are chosen, we encourage most pupils to continue with at least one language to enable them to access a balanced curriculum. GCSE is offered in French, German and Spanish. We have two specialist rooms equipped with interactive whiteboards. Our aims are that:

- Pupils understand that French, German and Spanish are living languages and have relevance to their lives.
- Pupils experience a variety of teaching methods, including games and ICT.
- Pupils can communicate in another language.
- Pupils can participate in trips and exchanges abroad.
- Pupils understand how languages work, so that they are equipped to learn other foreign languages in the future.
